STARA GRADISKA STARA GRADISKA
Vjekoslav Zugaj
The prisoner Ilija Klisurić wrote:

"Ilija Klisurić - Drniš- Balješ was here from 27th February to 27th March 1994. Because of three shells fired on Ustashas from MB/82 and - during cease fire"

In room number I , the author expresses his doubts related to the duration of the State of Krajina:

"The Serbs paid for Krajina with their lives some of them are dead and the others imprisoned".

Under these verses, the author wrote a farewell message: "I am leaving Poor Krajina for ever".

In room number 5 a group of prisoners, revelling in their crimes admit the following:

"Do you remerzzher, my war buddy, the battle under Papuk in Voćin, where we slaughtered the Ustashas. Psunj and Papuk are two brothers, Bilogora is their sister and they look like wings of the mountains. All of it was given to Ustashas by betrayal. "

The author is probably among the signed under the following message: "We came here on 7th January at 11.30 a.m. We were betrayed by a Slovenian dope, Dražić Lazar, the brigade commander. The following soldiers were present: Mijović Vladan, Nova Varoš, Baltić Muradin, Sjenica, Jakšić Velimir, Pljevlja, Popović Ljubiša, Priboj on Lim, Jakovljević Mile, Užice, Trmbić Ratomir, Nova Varoš, Šurić Milija, B.Bašta.

The graffiti in this room ends with a political lamentation on the Communist authorities of Knin:

"Raise up your heads brother Serbs, life writes history. Let those who put us here be ashamed of their betrayal."

In the rooms used as the kitchen and dining-room there is an anonymous message written by an obviously insane person:

"Master Jasenovac, 40 days for desertion.

In three car accidents - 7 dead, I escaped injury.

At twelve I killed the first enemy and threw him into the well.

I castrated approximately fifty cats. End - I am going to Canada, Toronto, Waiti Park 20.

In the same rooms a Serbian soldier Novak Njenjić, quoted the whole verdict: "The command of the 98th infantry brigade - 2nd June 1994.

Njenjić Novak, soldier - Disciplinary measure - imprisonment of Njenjić Bogdana Novak, born on l7th January 1965 in the village Gornje Vijače, Prnjavor district, the present address - Rajčić I8, this soldier of the 98th infantry brigade is sentenced for the following violation of army regulations: On 1 st June 1994, around 9 p.m., he was drunk and threatened the Commander of the first infantry brigade that he would attack him physically, he swore and insulted him and eventually fired 150 bullets from an A.P. thereby violating the Zagreb Agreement. I sentence him to 180 days in military prison - The Commander - lieutenant- colonel Milenko Babić."

The graffiti of his mate is much shorter and without military formalities: "Bjelan Ile, Knin - 180 days (from 7th February to 8th August 1994)." Someone well informed added under these data: "The villain stole gasoline from a tank".

The soldier Dragan Adžić found himself in Stara Gradiška for "stealing washing machines from Moslems" He defined it as "a serious violation of army discipline".

The Letter of an Anonymous Woman- Prisoner

The most painful of all the prison graffiti was written by an anonymous woman-prisoner, R.J., who did not dare sign her letter fearing additional punishment and torture. She was probably Croat but it was impossible to identify her since no data were found as to whether she had been released or exchanged as she hoped in her (last?) letter.

"Believe me I am not guilty of anything, why should I be punished.
But, until it proves true, we all have to suffer.
Mother Thank you for having taught me, to be as I am.
God granted our prayers and today I already feel better: It seems that tomorrow I am going to leave this place.
Thank you all the Saints in Heaven and all good people.
We should pray for the evil ones so as to absolve them from sin. Have pity on them oh Lord.
Every reasonable man prefers peace to war: Let us all be brothers and live in peace.
